The engine of business
24 January 2013
I should probably start this post off by letting you know that the views expressed are mine and mine alone, they are not the views of any of my employers, past or present. I wouldn't want them taking credit for my awesomeness anyways. This evening I posted a tweet about a company that was pretty negative. No, this isn't what you are thinking. I'm not apologizing. It is still as true as it was when I fired it off into the twittersphere. I also am not going to tell you what triggered this…
I fucked up
31 October 2011
This weekend, I fucked up. I don’t want to go into details about what I did or why, but I would like to examine what good can come from a relatively small mess up and what can be learned. Depending on how public what you did is, you need to go into damage control immediately. Begin analyzing how to mitigate the issue as soon as possible after (or even before) the immediate threat has been taken care of. You need to figure out who to apologize to and what other actions you need to do to help…
I can't do it
8 September 2011
When I was young I remember, at times, being absolutely frustrated because I thought I couldn't do something like memorizing vocabulary words or remembering multiplication tables. My parents made me practice and practice, until I got it. A few years later I was a freshman in high school taking Geometry for the first time. The first night that we had homework assigned I sat down to start working on it and after a few moments I gave up saying, "I can't do this, its too hard." My parents, hearing…
Idea: Facebook Stories
15 August 2011
Was watching some facebook product videos last night and came up with an idea for an app built on top of Facebook. The problem: Status updates are extremely ephemeral and matter for about 5 minutes before they are pushed to wayside by the rest of your friends’ status updates. Same goes for photos, video, checkins and other content shared on facebook- though to a lesser effect. My Solution: Create an app, most likely inside facebook to display a story. It would be similar to a photo album, but…
Thoughts on higher education and jobs
8 August 2011
If you are coming out of college today without a specific skill or experience in a area where your degree is focused, don't be surprised if you can't find a job. According to a recent article in CNN Money, 85% of college grads are moving back home before finding a job. 1 Peter Thiel's announcement of his 20 under 20 program where he also mentioned he thought there was a looming bubble in higher education because people blindly invested in higher and higher cost degrees assuming that the value…
An applied entrepreneurship curriculum
14 April 2011
Lately, I have been talking with professors and reading articles on teaching entrepreneurship. The field is a difficult one to teach because it requires application to learn. I want to outline my thoughts on how to best teach the a curriculum of entrepreneurship. The fact of the matter is, if you want to be an entrepreneur you need to be a leader, be innovative, and posses skills outside of business. I believe a great entrepreneurship program needs to be highly selective when allowing students…
Exiting my comfort zone
11 March 2011
I have worked for two companies that I wasn’t in charge of in my life. I spent a short stint during college at a computer repair and business network shop. I did a lot of different things there from replacing parts in Apple computers to troubleshooting wireless networks. I hated it. I could never understand why customers asked what was wrong when I would fix a problem knowing full-well that the answer coming out of my mouth would be incomprehensible to them. This job even made me change my…
The problems with aspiring entrepreneurs
5 March 2011
As I have mentioned before, I am an Entrepreneurship student at Kansas State University. Last I knew there were around 50 students in the program, which is fantastic for the program. However, I’m not sure of the value these students are getting. The program does teach you a lot of the ins and outs of different areas of business, but I’m not sure if the training is really focused on creating high potential entrepreneurs or if it is inadvertently creates business students who will make great…
Predicting the future & other crazy ideas
1 March 2011
After reading ‘How Great Entrepreneurs Think‘ in the February issue of Inc. Magazine and at about the same time reading Fred Wilson’s blog post on Marketing I had some thoughts that I wanted to get on to a screen. Some excerpts on great entrepreneurs from the article in Inc: “A survey of Inc 500 CEOs found that 60% had not written business plans before launching their companies. Just 12% had done market research.” Most of the CEOs involved in the Inc piece decided that instead of conducting…
Don't teach me what to think, teach me how to think.
12 February 2011
This post was inspired by my Business Law class. A class in which you “have” to attend to take notes: no book, doesn’t post notes online, no homework, and four tests. Completely memorization based and I am about fed up with classes like this. In an upcoming post I will tell you how I have learned to “hack” these tests. No nothing unethical or illegal. There are a number of things you just can’t learn effectively in a college lecture hall. Thinking back over my time in school one such subject…
Formally announcing Bunchd
29 October 2010
Today, one of the first bits of press was released that has covered my upcoming project called Bunchd. Usually I am pretty quiet about this project because of its enormous potential but I decided this unique event had potential to be big. I was contacted three weeks ago by a K-State Collegian (I refuse to link to them because they fucked me on a previous occasion) named Tiffany Roney. I called her back and she asked me like 5 questions at once and I answered by going through the history of…
Viva la revolution
27 October 2010
I recently read Malcom Gladwell‘s article in the New Yorker called Small Change, it is about the differences between social activisim in the 1950-70s compared with so called social activism today that is focused through facebook, twitter, and other social networks. The point is basically that to have high risk social activism like during racial segregation here in the U.S., you can’t just be loosely acquainted with someone involved, you have to have a strong relationship with someone involved…
